Blue Butterfly is an intimate, emotionally charged musical about survival, transformation, and the invisible cost of war. At its heart is Merjem, a Bosnian refugee and former soldier, piecing together her shattered identity through group therapy and fragile moments with her family. Bound by tradition and a vow to endure, she begins to question what it truly means to survive—especially when survival demands more than silence.
Inspired by Bosnian legend, the blue butterfly—once a symbol of mourning—becomes a metaphor for Merjem’s metamorphosis. From beneath grief, something fragile and beautiful begins to rise.
The libretto is written by Elisa Cornish and the original score is composed by Leandro Apud.
